It's time for single people to be singled out. Unmarried and Single Americans Week is Sept. 16-22. National Singles Week, created in 1984 by the Buckeye Singles Council in Ohio, has changed hands and names, but the sentiment that spawned it remains. This week provides an opportunity for the unmarried to celebrate their spouse-free lifestyles and denounce the stigmas surrounding single people — the spinster, lives-with-his-parents and aging bachelor stereotypes. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are about 100 million single and unmarried Americans. These include the unmarried, single moms and dads, divorcees, widows and widowers and those in relationships who have yet to take the plunge. A few trends in the single world, according to MillionaireCupid.com: • Healthy is the new sexy. More singles are highlighting their love of healthy living, including exercise, eating right, being active. • Online dating is no longer confined to the personal computer. Millions of people are using mobile dating platforms to find love, anytime, anywhere right from their cellphones. • Age is just a number when it comes to online dating and the numbers of boomers participating are growing. |
